How cryptic clues work
Every cryptic clue has two parts. One end of the clue (the first or last few words) is a plain definition of the answer. The rest is wordplay that builds the same answer, for example an anagram, a hidden word, or two words joined together.
Words like "mixed", "broken" or "recycled" usually mean the letters next to them get rearranged. The number in brackets is how many letters the answer has.
